Description

High specification Capacitor with Polypropylene (self-extinguishing) fire protection. Can be used as a 2 or 4 tab connection.

Generator Guru says:

The Capacitor is essential to your Generator producing electricity. It is required to excite the Alternator windings and reduce voltage surges. Capacitors should last the lifetime of the generator, but can burn out if any of the following occur:

  • Generator user has tried to draw more power than the Generator can produce.
  • A surge has happened on equipment and the capacitor has blown to protect the Alternator.
  • The Capacitor is made of Paper cells and the paper has degraded. (Usually pre 1998 generators.)
  • The Alternator has got damp and electricity has surged across the windings. (Dry out before running.)

NOTE: Do not use this type of Generator with sensitive equipment (Computers, LCD TV, Caravan Charging systems and anything with a computer chip) unless you have an in-line "Surge Protector." These generators are designed to run power tools and the electricity output is not controlled. This can result in damaging your equipment.

    Generator works again.

I worked out how to fix the generator by watching a utube demo. Took a picture of the mangled capacitor before I took it out and then put the new one in, connecting the wires following the picture.
Started it up and Bingo! it worked !

    My wrong diagnoses.

Posted by Richard on 16th Aug 2018

I'm unable to rate the capacitor I got from you because it did not fix my problem but I'll have to assume it its self is OK.
I initially misdiagnosed my problem and thought that the capacitor would fix it but it didn't.
Following more tests I realized that I need a rewind job to fix my 8000 W North Star generator because it burned out one of it's phases due to an overload.
Expensive proposition, almost as much as a new machine all together if you find someone to do it to begin with.
Now I'm looking for another new or good used one , just the generator part because my Honda engine which I've converted to burn natural gas instead of gasoline works great. Can you help with that?

After Hurricane Irma brought her wrath a, my husband purchased a 14 year old generator from a neighbor. With the help of these "gurus" he was able to determine the issue (the capacitor), replace it, & get the generator running!
