These are a common item to need replacing due to the exposed location of the part. We often hear that something has knocked it, resulting in a leaky, or broken Fuel Tap Petcock.
If you have had a Petcock break off with the stem still in the tank, use a pair of needle nose pliers and insert into the stem. Open the pliers up, and unscrew. It should release without damaging the tank. Be careful not to damage the thread on the tank, or you will need to replace the whole tank.
